With the economy in a freefall, more companies are pinching pennies by asking designers to work “on spec” — in other words, to produce completed creative work with no guarantee of being paid.
Spec work devalues the communication design profession. It reduces communication design to a commodity, rather than to a specialized service.
In response to the trend of working on spec, designers have bonded together as an organization called No!Spec. A grassroots effort, No!Spec formed three years ago after companies began soliciting work through design contests at an alarming rate.

This is the first time I heard this!! Outrageous! I also blame designers who agreed and worked under such contract “on-spec”!?!?
